Spring is the perfect time for a New Orleans picnic. The city feels extra charming, the magnolias are in bloom, the weather is just right. And suddenly the best plan is the simplest one: pack a few good snacks, bring the tea, and head somewhere beautiful.
Whether you're picnicking in Audubon, stretching out by Bayou St. John, or recreating the vibe somewhere far from Louisiana, here is how to build a picnic that feels easy, lovely, and just a little bit indulgent.
What makes a picnic feel New Orleans?
A picnic in New Orleans should feel easy, a little romantic, and worth lingering over. It’s less about putting together a picture-perfect spread and more about getting a few things exactly right: a beautiful spot, something delicious to share, and a drink that makes the whole thing feel a little more special.
And while there are plenty of classic New Orleans touches you can bring in, it does not have to be extravagant. The best New Orleans picnic has the same spirit the city does at its best — relaxed, flavorful, and charming without making a big show of it.
Our favorite picnic spots in New Orleans
If you are in the city, these are a few of our favorite New Orleans picnic spots to spread out a blanket and settle in for a while.
- Audubon Park is classic for a reason. With its ancient live oaks, lagoon, open green space, and picnic-friendly atmosphere, it has that graceful, unhurried feeling that makes you want to stay past your original plan. We think it’s such a perfect spot that we even named a tea after it.
- The Fly at Audubon Riverview Park is ideal if your perfect picnic includes a wide grassy lawn and a Mississippi River view. It feels laid-back and open, with plenty of room to stretch out, toss a frisbee, and pass around snacks.
- City Park is another easy yes. With 1,300 acres to explore and plenty of scenic space, it gives you options whether you want a quiet corner, a more social atmosphere, or room for a full-on picnic spread. Don’t miss the Botanical Garden, as well as the New Orleans Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden while you’re at it.
- Bayou St. John has that relaxed, lived-in kind of beauty that makes it such a favorite. It’s scenic, charming, and full of everyday NOLA life: people out for a run, dogs on neighborhood walks, kayaks drifting by, friends posted up on the grass with snacks and drinks. Whether you’re getting out on the water or setting up a picnic on the banks, it is a lovely place to spend a spring afternoon.
- Crescent Park s a good pick if you love a riverfront view and want your picnic with a side of skyline energy. Nestled in the vibrant Bywater neighborhood, it stretches 1.4 miles along the Mississippi and makes even a simple snack situation feel cinematic.
Not in New Orleans? No worries! The formula still works. Find a patch of shade, bring something delicious, pour the cold-brew tea, and give yourself permission to linger.
What to pack for a true NOLA-style picnic
The best picnics feel effortless, but only because somebody remembered the essentials.
Start with the basics: a blanket or quilt, reusable cups, napkins, a small cutting board, a picnic knife, wet wipes, an insulated tote, and a trash bag.
Then come the extras that make it feel special: something shareable, something briny, something sweet, and something cold to sip.
For the perfect New Orleans picnic, we like the following formula:
-
cold-brew tea (get our easy peasy cold brewing guide here)
-
a sandwich that can be cut into pieces and passed around
-
a little cheese and/or charcuterie
-
olives, pickles, or something pleasantly salty and vinegary
-
fruit that feels springy and easy to snack on
-
a cookie, pastry, or little dessert for the end
Cold-brew tea is the picnic non-negotiable
Every picnic needs a signature drink, and for us, that's cold-brew tea.
It's refreshing, easy to make ahead, easy to transport, and somehow manages to feel both practical and a little fancy (especially when served in aesthetic glassware).
It also fits the pace of a spring picnic perfectly. You make it in advance, let it chill, and then it’s ready when you are.
Depending on the mood, you can go bright and fruity, floral and soft, crisp and minty, or bold with a classic black tea that stands up to richer picnic foods. Add citrus slices, fresh mint, berries, or a little honey if you want to dress it up. Or keep it simple and let the tea do the work.
A good cold-brew tea does not just come along for the picnic. It helps set the tone.
In New Orleans? Here’s what we’d pick up
If you are building a picnic locally, New Orleans makes this very easy.
For a cheese-and-snack situation, St. James Cheese Company is an obvious favorite. They offer cheese and charcuterie platters, and they even have spring-themed platter options that feel especially picnic-friendly this time of year.
For sandwiches, Central Grocery’s beloved muffulettas are hard to beat. In fact, Central Grocery is the home of the original muffuletta. Cut into wedges, this very New Orleans sandwich is basically picnic gold: satisfying, filling, and, of course, shareable.
If you want another great sandwich option, Stein’s Market and Deli is a strong addition to the list. Their Lower Garden District deli offers specialty sandwiches along with a large selection of cured meats, salamis, and cheeses, which means you can go as simple or as snack-heavy as you want.
And of course, you can find the city’s favorite artisan tea blends at the New Orleans Tea Company. Shop online or in-person at The Bottom of the Cup Tea Room in the French Quarter.
How to enjoy a New Orleans picnic wherever you are
You don’t need to be in New Orleans to borrow the mood.
The real trick is not a specific park or a perfectly local menu. It’s the vibe. Choose a beautiful spot. Bring food worth slowing down for. Make a batch of cold-brew tea. Add one or two things that feel special to your area. Stay longer than you meant to.
That’s the part that matters.
A NOLA-style picnic is really just an argument for pleasure in small doses. A pretty setup, good bites, a cold drink, a little fresh air, and nowhere urgent to be.
